Italian

Firolino | Piadina à la Friedrichshain

       21. June 2011

Italian flatbread is taking over the Kiez.

Piadine is a thin, red type of pita bread that's served with different fillings folded inside. Firolino, located in Friedrichshain near Ostkreuz, has specialized on this Italian snack. The original recipe icludes flour, water, salt and – usually – lard or pig drippings. But in vegetarian-dominated Friedrichshain, the last ingredient is, of course, left out. For every order, the 2cm flatcakes are baked on a griddle plate (fat free) and then topped with pecorino, salami, ham or grilled vegetables, cheese and sausages are imported directly from a wholesaler in Italy. Add either rucola or one of the homemade spreadings made of eggplant or asparagus and many more. Is this starting to sound like the perfect summer snack? Well, it is. And when the thermometer climbs so far up that even light eating is too much to take, there's always iced coffee – like the choclate espresso frappé – or housemade lemonades and iced teas, or sweet dessert like the raspberry-ricotta cake or berry tiramisu.
