Picturing Berlin | Local Epicureanism

The Vimonda blog and the Le Schicken are working on a very special Berlin cookbook. Apply now to see your favorite picture of the city in it.

“We want to paint a portrait of Berlin's young, culinary side because nothing like it already exists. It won't be a classic cook book but rather a creative coffee table book with impressions of the city.” When Michael Frühbis, the creator of the Vimonda blog and co-founder of the Berlin cook book speaks about his newest project, it seems like the city has just been waiting for something like it. And it probably has, since so much is happening in Berlin's restaurant scene right now that topics like food, cooking and urban epicureanism are hard to avoid.

The book, which is set to come out by the end of the year at Le Schicken - “we're hoping it'll be released by Christmas” - features not only Berlin's food but also the city itself as a protagonist, its people, its places and its development as a bustling innovative metropolis. That is why its creators came up with the idea of incorporating unknown views of Berlin into the book, launching the “Picturing Berlin Photo Competition” in the process: “Everyone is free to join, whether they're a permanent resident of Berlin or not. We're just looking for pictures to use in the book. Participants are free to choose their own themes. The best pictures will be selected by a jury and published in the Berlin cook book” explained Frühbis. The winners will also get a chance to win a three course menu and one of the cookbooks for themselves.

Besides the winner's photos, prominent Berliners line the pages of the book – Musicians, chefs and actors talk about their favorite restaurants and recipes. “We met with many well-known chefs and gastronomers at places in the city they find interesting or important. All of them revealed two of their favorite recipes,” says Frühbis.

Frühbis' blog Vimonda revolves around urban culture, society and sustainability. The cooperation with Le Schicken and the Berlin cookbook complement his field of expertise and met with enthusiasm by Frühbis' colleagues in the art and design business who are always open to try new things.

The entry deadline for the photo competition is November 20. All information is available on the viamonda webiste and on facebook.
